This sculpture was carved in response to the Black Lives Matter riots – feeling dumbfounded by man’s inhumanity to man, yet wanting to bear witness to what was going on.
The hand in the wound gesture refers to the many religious paintings on the theme of The Sacred Wound of Christ. I feel strongly that we shouldn’t shy away from difficult issues, but probe more deeply to attend to the cause.
I only realised later there are other themes going on in this sculpture concerning female violation. It was this realisation that set me off on the path of addressing my own wounds and thereby finding peace and resolution.
