Based closely on the ‘baba/ bovvan/balbal’ stones that personified ancestors in a long tradition of steppe tumuli. It was believed that the souls of the dead were reborn with the sunrise so, like the Egyptian pyramids these kurgan helped the deceased to pass over to the next world.
